Q. What type of door do you enjoy working on and why? A. My favorite applications are high-cycle sectional door systems. Philadelphia has many apartment and condominium buildings that have hundreds of residents. This means the garage door system must be specified to handle that traffic. High cycle, torsion springs, 3" track, thick gauge hardware, double end hinges and continuous duty commercial door operators are all integral in designing a reliable high cycle sectional! Q. What is your favorite part about being a technician? A. It brings me great satisfaction to come to the rescue. Our customers rely on us to know the answers to their problems. I've always been one to "accept the challenge." At the end of the day, it is my responsibility to make sure that before I leave a site, that particular system is up to acceptable standards. Q. What is the best benefit, personally, for becoming a certified technician? A. Knowledge is power! It is also a huge confidence booster. As humans, we all go through those periods of self- doubt. Having the IDEA deem you as a competent technician helps mitigate some of those worries. Q. Has being certified led to opportunities in your career that otherwise wouldn't have happened? A. We had a situation in which we were going against another door company for a standard torsion spring change. Our prices were around the same, but the customer felt much more comfortable choosing a firm that went the extra mile to educate themselves. Q. What is a trade "secret" you wish you had learned earlier? A. Always have a list of prices from ALL your manufacturers. Sometimes it's the difference between closing a deal on the spot and letting them get away! Time is of the essence and customers want to know their project costs, almost immediately. If you tell someone you're going to send them a quote – do it! If you know someone within the industry who you think is a stand-out technician/owner/operator, please send an email to MLW we will reach out to them - you may just see them in one of the next articles.
