PRESIDENT'S COMMENTARY By Ed Hermanns, President, International Door Association IDA Board Meeting, Moving Toward Our Future Here we are: summer is already over, we are heading into the winter months and the IDA board has recently concluded its first official meeting with new staff at our new headquarters in Chicago. I have been very impressed with the smooth transition process, which was further enhanced during our visit. If you happen to be in the Chicago area, don't hesitate to stop by to say hello to the team. And if you are in the Washington, D.C. area, stop in to meet Lori, Delia and Andrew. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't give credit to the board of directors themselves, all of whom are extremely talented individuals who lead with the goal of making IDA the best it can be for its members. And I would like to thank each of you – our members – who voted in this extraordinary group with whom I have the pleasure of working. Our board meeting included the increasingly productive bi-annual Affiliate Leadership Conference, in which our partner organizations meet to collaborate and brain storm on future endeavors. If you have an Affiliate organization in your area, I strongly encourage you to attend a meeting or event to find out if joining is right for you. In addition to the great internal resources this group provides, it also receives notoriety in the online and print editions of ID&OI Magazine. The board is continuing its membership drive with our '15 for 12' campaign, which means members can pay for one year and receive benefits for the rest of 2018 and all of 2019. In addition, first-time members will have their initiation fees waived and also receive one complimentary pass to IDAExpo ® . So if your company has been on the fence about becoming an IDA member, now is the perfect time to join and reap over $1,000 in additional savings. Additional board updates include movement with the Communications Committee, which has been hard at work planning a new website – all with the goal of providing our members with a valuable resource of anything and everything IDA. The Member Services Committee is also looking to expand IDA product offerings and streamline communications to members about what is available. This has fed into a larger discussion about how an organization can become an IDA preferred vendor. The process is labor intensive, as the Member Services Committee spends a great deal of time vetting various companies for approval. The committee selects these vendors with one goal in mind: to provide a dealer with confidence in utilizing this company. Having a database of preferred vendors available as a resource to our members is a huge asset and offers a layer of comfort and reliability. Our Scholarship Committee is making tremendous strides in helping to change the lives of many students by awarding 28 scholarships this year. Having already reached the $1 million mark of scholarships awarded this past year, the scholarship foundation has now set its sights on the $2 million mark. We look forward to reaching our goal! The Technology and Education Committee – spearheaded by Chairperson David Dawdy - is currently working to change the face of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) NFPA 80 standard as it relates to fire door installation and servicing. This is an exciting time for IDA and we will be reaching out to our members to help push this code through to publication. Last but certainly not least, the IDAExpo Committee is continuing to work behind the scenes to bring our members the largest – and sure to be the most successful – event in 2019. In co-locating with FenceTech and MetalFab, our combined efforts will result in an experience you won't want to miss. These are just a few small samples of the exciting changes and initiatives occurring within IDA and the board is looking forward to working in making these visions a reality. Onward, Ed Hermanns President 8 International Door & Operator Industry™
