34 International Door & Operator Industry™ MANAGING DIRECTOR'S CORNER Happy New Year! As we prepare for the holiday season, culminating in the celebration of New Year's Day, I ask everyone to look ahead to see what's around the corner. 2019 is shaping up to be a great year for IDA, as we have a number of first-time events in play. To kick off the year, we'll hold a January Strategic Planning Committee Meeting in Miami, where we'll facilitate a session designed to drill deep into the opportunities, strategies and objectives important to IDA members. The board will be taking a hard look at how IDA leadership and staff can work to enhance its membership value proposition. Our highly-anticipated event is the IDAExpo ® in Indianapolis, which through our collaboration with the American Fence Association (AFA) and the National Ornamental and Miscellaneous Metals Association (NOMMA), is co-located with FenceTech and MetalFab. More information about the week's winning educational and social events can be found starting on page 53. Another new event in conjunction with IDAExpo is a co-hosted event with the Asociación Española de Fabricantes de Puertas Automáticas (APA) - the Spanish Association of Automatic Door Manufacturers. Additionally, IDA is proud to announce International Congress of Automatic Doors – ICAD 2019 – will also be taking place at the Indianapolis Convention Center on Tuesday, March 12. This event will include panel discussions and presenters on a wide range of topics covering issues affecting the global automatic door industry. Attendees include APA delegates from Spain, as well as international leaders and stakeholders from related industries. This is another important step in our efforts to fulfill the vision of IDA as a truly international association. Be sure to look for more details on this event in the next edition of ID&OI. An important goal for any association is to represent the entire industry to its members. Because of this, IDA will renew its focus to Affiliate and regional events in 2019. But that can only happen if our membership reflects a significant share of the door market. IDA will be looking for new ways to grow the membership in order to achieve that market share. In order to do this, the IDA board approved the creation of a task group that will look into ways IDA and its Affiliates can work together. Understanding the needs of our members – and even our non-members – is only the first step in growing IDA. We believe that local and regional groups can play an important role to energize the IDA membership. The New Year also provides us with a chance to assess the priorities in our lives and to find that elusive balance between family, faith, friends and work. I wish each of you a joyful holiday season and a prosperous year to come. Mike Fischer is the new interim managing director of the IDA. Fischer has been in the building products industry for 35 years. You can contact Mike at mike@doors.com.
