Institute of Door Dealer Education and Accreditation News&EvEnts; type of continuing education activity you attend. If no formal certifcate of completion is given, a letter from the course provider giving us the information, or a letter from you with the information is normally suffcient. Even if the CEU activity was in-house training, we are looking for the topic covered (name of class), duration (how long it lasted), date the training occurred, the name of the instructor(s) and where the training took place. This gives IDEA the ability to audit or confrm these activities if necessary. Generally speaking, reporting of CEUs is considered an honor system, but we will respond to any suspicious CEU submissions. IDEA Offcers and Directors Garry Stewart (IDA), President The Doorman Service Company Kent, Washington garry@doormanservice.com Dan Dombkowski (DASMA), 1st V.P. The Chamberlain Group Elmhurst, Illinois dan.dombkowski@chamberlaingroup.com Joseph Chisholm (IDA), 2nd V.P. Joseph Chisholm Door Corp. Waltham, Massachusetts joedoors@aol.com Bearge Miller (DASMA), Treasurer Miller Edge, Inc. Jennersville, Pennsylvania bmiller@milleredge.com I represent a manufacturer and want to offer training classes for our dealers that would be CEU eligible. Can I do that? Absolutely, and many already do. Whether you are conducting training at annual dealer conferences or providing training at the dealer level, we would simply ask for an outline of the training, so that we could notify you in advance of how much CEU credit can be applied for each certifed technician or accredited dealer participating in your training. Then, as with any other CEU submission, we just need the same information as outlined above. I am a Certifed Door Dealer Consultant, and as a manufacturer's sales rep, I participate in company training throughout the year, such as at our annual sales conferences. Does this count towards my CEUs? Yes it would, however, we can report to you that a growing number of manufacturer personnel are now enjoying the educational programming that takes place at the annual IDA Expo. We strongly encourage you to take part in the diverse educational sessions at this annual industry event. Why are CEU's being required for certifed individuals? It was always written into the credentialing rules, from the frst Residential Installer Certifcation program that launched in 2001, but enforcement of the provision was suspended for lack 68 of educational access by installers and technicians. Due to increased manufacturer-sponsored training and education activities, and our ability to produce on-line content, the IDEA leadership decided to formally initiate the requirement. More importantly, continuing education is considered a fundamental aspect of credentialing. Failure to require either continuous learning or re-certifcation exams is generally considered outside of the credentialing mainstream, and would be viewed as a faw in the program. This is because everything changes, and today that is more true than ever before. An individual who was certifed in 2001 was likely to have learned to install wood doors, whereas that same individual may not have installed another one in the last decade. Changes in the UL Standard, wind codes, technology, changing markets and the expansion of door and access control products, all combine to make CEUs a fundamental component of a program that is designed to provide consumers with information regarding how to distinguish between professionals and non-professionals in our industry.
