PRESIDENT'S COMMENTARY By Randy Oliver, President, International Door Association Para la versión en Español, visitare "The successful person has the habit of doing the things failures don't like to do." – Thomas Edison In the last issue of the magazine I wrote about one of life's greatest mysteries and that is why all door and access systems dealers aren't members of the International Door Association since the investment is so small and the rewards are so great. In this issue I'd like to talk about another of one of life's greatest mysteries and that is why more door and access systems dealers don't take advantage of the greatest resource tool offered to them – the annual IDAExpo™. I attended my frst DODA Convention in 1987 in Nashville at the Opryland Hotel when I was 27 years old and I was overwhelmed by everything I learned and saw when I was there. My eyes and mind were opened to so many new products, ideas, and opportunities it was diffcult to take it all in. Of course since this was my frst convention I was like a kid in a candy store and went around the exhibit foor collecting all the free goodies and brochures I could fnd and almost had to purchase another suitcase just to take home everything I collected. I've since learned to be much more selective in what I bring home. In addition to being able to see the latest and greatest products on the exhibit foor I also enjoy meeting new potential suppliers and talking with our current suppliers. During the years I developed relationships and purchased products from many suppliers that I became aware of for the frst time on the exhibit foor. I can think of one such vendor that is helping us save thousands of dollars each year which has easily recouped my investment in attending our industry's annual IDAExpo each year. Many of the exhibitors offer "show specials" that you can only take advantage of if you attend the IDAExpo which can also help you recoup your investment in attending the event each year. Since 1987 I've only missed two conventions. I look forward every year to the IDAExpo because I know I'll beneft in so many ways. One of the ways I beneft is from listening to and absorbing the great information presented by the terrifc keynote speakers. During the years we've had some famous people like Lou Holtz, Terry Bradshaw and Johnny Bench who have inspired us with their personal stories and motivated us to be best we can be. We've also had some less famous speakers who have delivered some very impactful messages. One of these speakers was T. Scott Gross. I'm not sure the year I frst heard him speak but I know after I heard him speak at one of our conventions I ordered a set of his VHS tapes so that gives you some idea how long ago it was. He talked about "Positively Outrageous Service" and about doing things for your customers that were "random and unexpected and out of proportion to the circumstances".
