Applicants have the option of taking either the Commercial Rolling Door Systems Technician Certifcation exam or Rolling Steel Fire Door Certifcation exam, but most opt for the bundled examination which is both exams rolled into one. Last year, IDEA added a two-day course on Commercial Sectional Door Systems, which was similarly full. That course covered the following topics: • Codes, Standards and Organizations • Components – Sections and Hardware • Components – Counterbalance, Track • Types of Lifts • Specialty Applications • Specifcations for Sectional Doors • Methods of Operation • Obtaining and Installing the Correct Door • Operator Installation • Service and Operation of Commercial Sectional Doors • The Importance of Safety • Summary and Review Students attending this two-day school are offered the Commercial Sectional Door Systems Technician Certifcation at the conclusion of the second day. These are just the latest items added for technicians who attend the IDAExpo. IDEA continues to offer its full-day Train-the- Trainer class, which will be presented once again in 2016 by Christine Blair-Monroy, of LiftMaster. That class will be conducted on Wednesday, April 27, and the $350 per person fee includes lunch. The 2016 IDAExpo also will include testing on Wednesday and Thursday for all IDEA credentialing programs. The IDAExpo has become an epicenter for door industry credentialing, with more than 100 exams being taken in both of the last two years, and overall numbers of tests taken having increased steadily over the past several years. Of course, Saturday morning will begin with another technician training opportunity at The Super Tech! In addition to the course offerings, technicians attending the IDAExpo provide their companies with a major morale boost upon returning to the feld. The exhibits provide them with an opportunity to see and speak with professionals who manufacture the products they service and install, and to see the industry in a more complete form. Most dealers who bring technicians to the Expo report later that the performance of those individuals increased almost immediately upon returning to work. Now is the time to start planning. Pulling technicians out of the feld to attend the IDAExpo requires that schedules be adjusted to accommodate the time away from the job. However, technicians whose efforts warrant being given the opportunity to attend their industry's premier educational and product showcase event deserve the honor of attending the event. And, your company will reap rewards from it. If properly planned in advance, bringing your top technician(s) to the IDAExpo will boost your company's customer service, enhance employee morale and, most likely, bring home some new credentials that can be used to differentiate your company in your market.
