Institute of D oor D ealer Education and A ccredita tion NEWS&EVENTS; Things are Happening! Are You on Board? It's an exciting time to be given the honor of serving as IDEA President. Due to the outstanding efforts of the many dedicated volunteer leaders of this organization, IDEA is in an exciting, high- growth phase that has been a work in progress for more than a decade. leaders laid in IDEA's formative days has provided a longstanding basis for credentialing and education in the door and access systems industry. Dan's ambitious approach led to the industry's fi rst Dealer Accreditation program, which has been followed by six installer and technician certifi cation programs. In conjunction with certifi cation of our technicians, a formalized course to train those who train others has resulted in hundreds of By Garry Stewart, IDEA President recent president Mark Daus, whose understated leadership style belied his exceptional capabilities. Mark is one who has been a dynamic leader and remarkable talent on the IDEA Board of Directors since his appointment by DASMA in 2004. His technical knowledge, design skills and general understanding of our mission have made Mark an indispensable fi gure in the work of IDEA. I am very happy to know he will remain on our board of directors. It was moving to see our founding president, Dan Apple, receive the IDEA Commitment to Professionalism Award at the 2012 IDA Expo, and to have him on stage for the announcement that this award would be re-named beginning in 2013 as the Daniel R. Apple Commitment to Professionalism Award. It was Dan's vision in 1996-97 that we are experiencing today. The foundation he and 11 other industry 70 IDEA Sanctioned Trainers throughout our industry, which has elevated professionalism at the fi eld level. The current, sustained level of increased certifi cation activity has likely come as a result of that recognition, and the economic reality in which dealers recognize the critical importance of market differentiation. I am following big shoes in 2012, coming in after our most International Door & Operator Industryâ„¢ Between Dan Apple and Mark Daus, IDEA was led through its infancy into its current state of growth and success by Jim Kelly, Gary Lombard, Barbara Kelkhoff, Dan Bernacki, Steve Guyton and Ed Hermanns, each of whom left an indelible mark on the organization and contributed to our progress. In recalling all of the efforts that brought us to this point, I feel blessed to be given this opportunity for many reasons, but one in particular: It was a personal goal to see training and professionalism advanced for our industry that led me to become involved in what would become the International Door Association via Far Western Garage Door Association.
