22 International Door & Operator Industry™ today's market place. I find that a very interesting concept in marketing; not competing with one's competitors, but rather with one's self. "We're a family owned and operated company that really takes pride in what we do, and we've been blessed with more than 40 years in business. Our goal is to treat every customer like family, and to give them more than they expected every time we do business," stated Nick. Following this part of our visit, we addressed the topic of Big Box Stores and Manufacturer Distribution Centers. This caused me to reflect back when these two changes in our industry were considered by many as being the demise of independent door dealer businesses. As a matter of fact, IDA even conducted a session during the IDAExpo® entitled, "Is the Dealer Dead?" Of course the dealer survived these 'scares' with some even taking advantage of both 'threats'. We next talked about the humanitarian side of the company. Due to the recent flooding in Houston, the firm donated substantially to the Salvation Army, Houston Food Bank, and Texas Diaper Bank. However, not only did they provide financial support, they went well beyond with a personal effort. Nathan and Nick traveled to Houston to assist with relief efforts, and were completely overwhelmed by the level of destruction the storm brought. "First, we met a couple who needed a ride to Spring and we got them to their 1 and 2 year old children," stated Nathan. "The husband was a youth pastor and they were stranded after a job interview in California," he added. Following this effort, the two men provided assistance in a water rescue effort with the National Guard, Texas navy, and local law enforcement. They delivered supplies to Conroe residents, and helped unload 50 trucks of supplies. When I asked how their service work impacted him, Nathan stated, "My faith in humanity was restored. Helping others and feeling their pain reminded both Nick and me what really matters in life, he added." As I close this article, I must emphasize the fact that our industry has a long history of independent garage door dealers raising the bar each day for others to reach…this bar being professional service to customers and community and caring for employees. Plano Overhead Garage Door has most definitely raised the bar for others to follow and strive to exceed. And, I'd certainly be remiss if I didn't acknowledge that IDA exists to provide support to all dealers who aspire to do the best they can to provide quality services to customers. IDA strives every day to enhance door dealer professionalism and our industry's overall image. DOORDEALERDIALOG (continued from page 21)
