IDA's most recent regional educational meeting – in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on March 2 – was a standing room only success despite the nor'easter that hit Philadelphia and shut down much of the Eastern seaboard. As the day and the wind and snow progressed, some unfortunate attendees saw hours, if not a day or two, added to their commute home. More than 150 dealers, technicians, and exhibitors participated in the meeting, which exceeded attendance at the highly successful Cleveland, Ohio, meeting on November 10 where 105 attendees were greeting with the season's first snowfall in Cleveland. Both meetings, and the upcoming meeting in Denver on June 1, follow the same pattern-- meaningful management seminars in the morning and afternoon, and technician training in the afternoon. The meeting begins with Tom Wadsworth, editor of DASMA's Door and Access Systems magazine, telling the audience the story of his dedicated crusade to expose the "Bad Bob's" of the industry, and giving advice and collateral materials to dealers so they can combat Bad Bob's. Other management programs have ranged from how dealers can attract, hire and retain quality employees, to how social media and internet marketing can increase sales. The technician training portion of the meeting is taught by experts in operator troubleshooting and fire door installation. The regional meetings were brought back to take education and member services to members in areas not served by affiliate organizations. For some of the attendees, going to the regional meeting is the only contact they have with IDA as it is not possible for them to attend the annual IDAExpo. The second day of the meeting is set aside for IDEA testing, which has also been a very popular event with the area technicians. The IDA Board of Directors, at its February Leadership meetings, voted to continue the IDA regional meeting concept through the next budget year, July 1, 2018 – June 30, 2019. The cities selected for regional meetings include Portland, Oregon in November 2018; Tampa, Florida in March 2019; and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in June 2019. Information will be available soon for the November 9 IDA Regional meeting in Portland.
